Final Results

In a tournament that matches defending high school champions from 2008 together on the same course, regardless of being public, private or an independent, Ravenscroft entered the 3^rd Annual North Carolina High School Invitational hosted by Treyburn CC, A McConnell Golf Property, looking to win the team title that had eluded them the previous two years. In 2007, Green Hope defeated them at Raleigh CC in a scorecard playoff. Ravenscroft came up eight shots short to Green Hope in last year’s event at Treyburn.

Coach Jimmy Cox knew heading into this year’s event that his team was deep enough to finally win the championship that had eluded his team the previous two years. At the beginning of this year, they had two goals: Win the state championship and the high school invitational.

His team turned in a great performance under tough scoring conditions, with only two players breaking par on the par 72, 6,950 yard layout, located in northern Durham. “We are very excited to accomplish our goal of winning this event after finishing second twice to Green Hope,” stated a very happy Coach Cox. His team had been playing well heading into this year’s event with a team handicap playing to scratch.

With a fifteen shot win over second place Green Hope, Coach Cox said, “We are looking forward to defending our state championship in four weeks at Bryan Park.” Senior Bo Andrews (Georgia Tech) lead Ravenscroft with a one under par score of 71, which also placed him second in the individual competition.

The low individual was Andy Knox, a junior from Apex high school, carding a great round of two under 70 which included four birdies. “I made a long putt for birdie on the par 4 fifth hole that got my round going” said Knox.

“We are very proud to give back to junior golf by not only hosting this event the last three years but also establishing our scholarship program in the local community,” said Brian Kittler, McConnell Golf’s Director of Golf. “I would also like to thank Jason Cox and TYGA for teaming up with us (McConnell Golf) to put on a first class event with the strongest field on the high school golf calendar. We are very thankful to get this kind of field and see how these future stars in the making perform on a championship course.” Treyburn has been the host site for PGA Tour School the last three years and will host the CGA’s 29^th Carolinas Mid-Amateur later this week.

McConnell Golf has supported and hosted all three of the events; 2007 Raleigh CC and 2008-2009 Treyburn CC. The concept of this event came about from an article written by Eugene Robinson of the N-O several years ago. Jason Cox, Director of Junior Golf for the CGA and TYGA and Brian Kittler, McConnell Golf, took Mr. Robinson’s idea and turned it into action. The first event was held at Raleigh CC with Green Hope taking home the team championship over Ravenscroft. Ryan Sullivan and Kevin O’Connell needed extra holes after posting rounds of two under par, 69. Ryan defeated Kevin in a three hole playoff to win the individual title.
