Loy & Wooten Salvage the Round to Seal the Victory

Loy and Wooten Salvage the Round to Seal the Victory

Kinston, N.C. (AUGUST 20, 2016) – Second round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s 31st Roy Jones Junior Invitational at Kinston Country Club located in Kinston, N.C. on August 20, 2016.

Nicholas Loy of Greenville, N.C. is no stranger to the Roy Jones Junior Invitational as he has been playing in it since he was about 10 years old.  Prior to today, he had won all of the age divisions as he has grown up.  Now he has added the 16-18 age division and overall championship to his list of titles.  Coming into the final round, Loy was two strokes off of the lead and knew he had to play well to have a shot at winning the title.  “Me and my caddy just kind of set a number, we were thinking around even or one-under-par would be the number we needed to do to clinch it.”  He felt that “it was going to be a bit more difficult of conditions today so we just tried to stay consistent throughout the day and stay level minded throughout the day.”  Staying consistent and level minded is exactly what Loy did throughout his round.  He began his round with two pars and a birdie but quickly gave it back on the fifth hole with a double bogey.  He finished his front nine with three pars and a bogey to shoot 38, two-over-par.  Loy did not let this get to him as he started his back nine the same way he started the front, with two pars and a birdie to go back to one-over-par for the day.  He went on to play the next three holes at two-over-par.  Loy knew he had to get it back together during the last three holes if he still wanted to have a chance at the title.  During his final three holes of the invitational, Loy was able to make two birdies and a par to finish his back nine at one-under-par, 34.  He finished at 72, one-over-par.  Loy stated, “that my driver did not really want to cooperate with me today so that made it a little difficult but for the first time in a while I had a really good putting day today.” In the end, Loy won the division and overall championship after a two-hole playoff against Campbell Rand after tying with a two-day total of 146.

Amy Wooten of Clinton, N.C. was able to put together another solid round that was strong enough to hold off her top competitor, Sarah Funderburg, by one stroke with a two day total off 149.  Coming into today with a two-stroke lead Wooten “focused on beating the course and not focusing on what Sarah did.” She did eventually start paying attention to what Sarah was doing because Wooten’s “irons were way off today” and began to worry once Sarah made a birdie on the eighth hole.  Her irons were a “bit better” and her putter is what “saved” her today.  Wooten had a total of six pars and three bogies on the front side to shoot a score of three-over-par, 39.  She had a rough start to her back nine starting with another par followed by three bogies in a row.  Wooten began to “relax” and was able to salvage her round by making four pars and a birdie in last five holes.  She was able to drop a 30-foot putt on the eighteenth hole to save par and win to title, avoiding a playoff.  “The relief is so incredible after making that putt on eighteen know and to win,” Wooten stated.
