Funderburg and Wooten Finish the Deal at Coastal Plains Junior Amateur
GREENVILLE, N.C. (July 1, 2016) -- Final Round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association Coastal Plains Junior Amateur at Bradford Creek in Greenville, N.C. on July 1, 2016.
With threatening skies throughout the day, Joey Funderburg of Wilmington N.C. made sure to provide himself a safe cushion after beginning the day with just a one-shot lead. The recent high school graduate picked up where he left off after his scorching first round front turning at two-under par during the final round. Funderburg relied on experience he gained playing in the final group at the CGA's Creed Junior Boys' coming down the home stretch. "I like playing in the last group because I have my competition with me, it is definitely fun," Funderburg said. His competition was kept at bay when Funderburg avoided bogeys and made a birdie on the 16th to build a four-stroke lead. "Knowing I can do it will be a big motivational boost from here," Funderburg said after a tap in par sealed the victory and gave him a total of ten-under-par 134 . Nicholas Page of Dunn N.C. was unable to keep with with Funderburg's pace but turned in an even-par 72 to finish second overall at six-under-par 138, which tournament founder Mike Cato said would win almost any other year.
Amy Wooten of Clinton N.C. came into the final round with a three-stroke lead and showed right away that nerves were not going to be a factor. The rising junior opened her round with five pars before suffering a bogey on No. 6. Wooten quickly recovered with a birdie on No. 8 to finish even-par on the front side. Defending champion Sarah Funderburg of Wilmington N.C. was unable to muster a comeback down the stretch. Wooten managed to beat the rain, and the rest of her competition, to claim the victory after a 75 gave her a tournament total 146. Fundergurg secured a second place finish at 150. Hailey Freedman of Chapel Hill, N.C. came in third.
The TYGA Coastal Plains Junior Amateur was the brainchild of Mike Cato, who brought the event to Bradford Creek 17 years ago. Boys and girls in North Carolina from 8-18 are given the opportunity to compete in the event. "Scores this year show how good these kids are getting." Cato said. Players and parents complemented Cato throughout the week on the course condition, which Cato said, "means everything to me. We come to work everyday to try to put the best product out there. This is a good community event."
Boy's 15 - 16 Age Division

Loy showed his resilience by eagling the first playoff hole, the par-5 10th, to defeat Kim, who shot two-under-par 70 to get into the playoff at 142. Patrick Carlin of Raleigh, N.C. came in third at 145.
