Leaders Hold On to Take the Title
Winston-Salem, N.C. (AUGUST 17, 2016) – Second round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s Tournament of Champions at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. on August 17, 2016.
Nicholas Page of Dunn, N.C. and Chris Kim of Cary, N.C. began the second round of the TYGA Tournament of Champions tried at 69, three-under-par. After competing back and forth for 18-holes, they finished tied yet again both shooting 72, even par, with a two day total of 141. It ended up taking seven playoff holes for Kim to close out Page for the overall boy’s championship with a birdie. Coming into today tied for lead Kim “just wanted to focus” on his game “and not worried about other people and just have fun.” The biggest challenge he had to overcome to with both the overall championship and 14-15 age division was his putter. Kim stated, “ my putter was so out of control sometimes and sometimes it was good.” Now that he has won his division and overall championship he is “pretty happy” and is looking to defend his title next year.
Samantha DeBusk of Lexington, N.C. came out firing with newfound confidence today after setting a personal 18-hole best score of 76 during the first round. Coming into today’s round her plan of attack was to “don’t worry about score, don’t worry about what other people are doing, it is just you and the course, and just have fun.” This strategy worked well for DeBusk as she once again set a new person best by breaking par for the very first time shooting 71, one-under-par. “I did not know I was under par until I was walking into the clubhouse because I wasn’t paying attention to my score.” With these two great rounds, she was able to clinch the championship over her strong competitors with a two-day total of 145, three-over-par. “I was hitting my irons the right distances and right at the pin. That allowed me not to have to putt very much today and if I did miss it (the putt), it was a tap-in for par. I also hit my driver a lot, only missing once (fairway).”
