Cook & Wooten Take the Lead at 31^st Roy Jones Junior

Kinston, N.C. (AUGUST 16, 2016) – First round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s 31^st Roy Jones Junior Invitational at Kinston Country Club located in Kinston, N.C. on August 19, 2016.

Joseph Cook of Rocky Mount, N.C. came out looking to take an early lead at the 31^st Roy Jones Junior Invitational at Kinston Country Club and that’s exactly what he did. Cook had a strong start to his round with a birdie on the second hole but quickly gave it back with a bogey on the third hole. He went on to play the next five holes at even par. Cook was unable to save his par on the ninth hole, finishing the front with a 37, one-over-par. Cook did not let his bogey effect his play going into the back nine as he began with five more pars. He then was able to play the next three holes at two-under-par before taking a double bogey in the eighteenth to shoot even par on the back nine and a total score of 72, one-over-par. This gives him a two-stroke lead for his division, 16-18 age division, and a one stroke lead for the title going in the final round.

Amy Wooten of Clinton, N.C. got off to a rough start to her round with three bogeys in the first five holes. She was able to battle back in the remaining four holes on the front nine by making back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes followed by two pars. This allowed Wooten to finish the nine at one-over-par, 37. Going into the back nine, Wooten was looking to continue her strong play throughout the second nine. Like the start of the front nine, she began with a bogey but quickly made a birdie. During her last five holes, Wooten had one bogey and four pars finishing the back nine at one-over-par, 36. She finished with a total score of 73, two-over-par, giving her a two-stroke lead going into the final round.

Boy’s 16-18 Age Division

Joseph Cook of Rocky Mount, N.C. was able to take the lead with the low round of the day, 72, one-over-par.

Boy’s 14-15 Age Division

Ethan Hall of Morehead City, N.C. and Will Hawley of Raleigh, N.C. finished the first round in a tie for second for the title shooting 73, two-over-par.

Boy’s 12-13 Age Division

Andrew Gallagher of Grinesland, N.C. was able to tie the low round of the day, 72, and get himself a five-stroke lead in his division.

Boy’s 11 & Under

Bizzell Pate of Elizabeth Town, N.C. and Michael Williams Rose Hill, N.C. tied with a modified stableford score of 25, giving them a one point lead.

Girl’s 14-18 Age Division

Amy Wooten of Clinton, N.C. goes into the final round with a two-stroke lead by shooting 73, two-over-par.
