Poole Leads the Way at Coastal Plains Junior Amateur

GREENVILLE, N.C. (June 22, 2017) -- First Round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association Coastal Plains Junior Amateur at Bradford Creek in Greenville, N.C. on June 22, 2017.

The first round of the TYGA Coastal Plains Junior Amateur was completed at Bradford Creek Golf Club in almost perfect conditions for scoring. The boys divisions were led by Justin Poole of Wendell, N.C. who recorded 5 birdies on his way to a bogey-free five-under 67. When asked about how he played for the day Poole said that the best part of his game was his driving off the tee and his strong iron shots into the green. Poole added to the interview that going into tomorrow the main part of his game that he wanted to improve was his putting as he felt that he left a few shots out there including a birdie putt on his final hole the par-4 18th. Poole is followed closely by Dawson Daniels of Greensboro, N.C. who sits in second one shot back after a first round four-under 68.

Amy Wooten of Clinton N.C. was the only player in the Girl's Division to find red numbers. The rising high school senior found her first birdie of the day on the par-5 5th. Wooten would go on to birdie 3 more holes in route to a two-under 70 for the defending champion. Wooten feels comfortable about her game going into tomorrow and has a comfortable 9 shot lead going into the final round tomorrow.

The TYGA Coastal Plains Junior Amateur was the brainchild of Mike Cato, who brought the event to Bradford Creek 18 years ago. Boys and girls in North Carolina from 8-18 are given the opportunity to compete in the event. "We don't want to exclude anyone. It is so much fun watching the kids play and grow. One of my biggest joys is watching an eight year-old turn into a 17 and 18 year-old and win the whole tournament." The strength of the tournament is built on the cornerstone Cato and his army of volunteers provide. "All of the volunteers, staff, and sponsors help us put on a great product," Cato said.

Boy's 16-18 Age Division

Justin Poole of Wendell, N.C. leads his age division by one shot with a five-under 67.

Boy's 14-15 Age Division

Eston Lee of Four Oaks, N. C. finds himself atop the division after coming in one-under-par 71.

Boy's 12-13 Age Division

Hayes Mahoney of Greensville, N.C. shot a three-over 75 to take the lead in his age division.

Boy's 11 & Under (Modified Stableford Scoring System)

Lake Williams of Greenville, N.C. is at the top of the leaderboard with 34 points.

Girls' 16-18 Age Division

Amy Wooten of Clinton, N. C. is the leader of her division after shooting a two-under-par 70.

Girls '14-15 Age Division

Trinity Ahing of New Bern, N.C. shot a nine-over 79 to lead her division.

Girls' 12-13 Age Division

Jessica Towsend of Wilmington, N.C. shot 101 to take the lead in her division.
