Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. finished the first round of the TYGA Coastal Plains as the overall leader with a three-under-par, 68. Hudson is grouped in the Boys' 16-18 division. Adam Hathaway of Greenville, N.C. leads the Boys' 14-15 division with an even-par, 71, Quinlan Polin of Cary, N.C. leads the Boys' 12-13 division with a two-over-par, 73, Wells Mahoney of Greenville, N.C. leads the Boys' 11 and under division with 30 points, and the leader of the Girls' 12-18 division is Elizabeth Ritchie of Havelock, N.C., who shot a nine-over-par, 80.
Hudson credited his putting as the deciding factor in today's round. "I putted really well,' said the rising high school junior, "I was trying to keep it in play and score with the putter."
Hudson did just that, totaling five birdies, three of which came on the back nine. "I made three 15-foot putts on each one," said Hudson, "I started hitting the putts a little firmer as the day went on and finally started seeing the lines well."
As for tomorrow, Hudson said he's just going to try to repeat today's performance. "I just want to try to hit fairways and greens, and then I'll let the putter do the work."
Tied for second place in the Boys' 16-18 division and overall is Eston Lee of Four Oaks, N.C. and Carter Rains of Greenville, N.C., who both shot a two-under-par, 69. The only other player in red numbers for the day was Carter Boulia of Cary, N.C., who had a one-under-par, 70.
The TYGA Coastal Plains Junior is a 36-hole stroke play event. The 11 and under division will play nine holes each day on a modified, Stableford points system.
