Cameron Hardison of Greenville, N.C, Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. and Kyle Haas of Winston-Salem took a three way lead after the first round of the Coastal Plains Junior Amateur. All three came in with a strong 2-under-par, 69’s for the day.
Hardison started out the day with two birdies back to back on Nos. 1 and 2, and had two more birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. Hardison said that while his putting was strong, going into tomorrow he is planning on zeroing in and sinking even more long putts. Hardison is coming off of a third place finish at the TYGA Bojangles Junior Open.
“I made a few putts here and there that really paid off. Tomorrow I just need to keep putting well and make a few more,” Hardison said.
DeChellis had a steady front nine, and on the back started playing birdie golf. DeChellis had back to back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4, had two bogies on Nos. 15 and 17, but made up for it with two more birdies on Nos. 16 and 18.
“I hit my driver really well, my wedges were working for me too. Other than that, didn’t really change too much, “ DeChellis said. “Hopefully I’ll hit a few more greens in regulation tomorrow, but other than that I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Haas came out with three birdies in a row on the first three holes. He credits this round to his putting and iron play.
“I made a few putts and actually holed out from the fairway and that’s pretty much it,” Haas said.
During the stay at home orders for COVID-19, Haas took advantage of the endless days for golf and tuned up his game. “I’ve been playing pretty much everyday which has been so nice,” Haas said.
As for tomorrow, Haas said that he is going to focus on his game. “There are a lot of great players in the tournament so I’m just going to go out tomorrow and do my best.”
Sierra Cardi took the lead for the girls division at 5-over-par, 76, and JP Wagner came in first for the Boys’ 12-13 flight with a score of 4-under-par, 68.
