Sierra Cardi of Wilmington, N.C. took the overall title for the Girls’ Division with a total score of 18-over-par, 160. Cardi posted a 76 for the first round, and 84 for the final round.
“I feel awesome. I had a tough second day but happy I pulled through. I tried to keep it in play, and stay consistent and everything worked out from there,” Cardi said. Cardi will attend UNC Asheville in the fall to compete for the women’s golf team.
Sanaa Carter of Jacksonville, N.C was named the Girls’ 12-14 Flight champion at the Coastal Plains Junior Amateur this afternoon. Carter carded two scores of 86 and 81 for the tournament, putting her at the total of 167 for the tournament.
For the Boys; 12-13 Flight, JP Wagner of Cary, N.C. took first place after leading both days at the Coastal Plains Junior Amateur. Wagner came out with a strong 3-under-par, 68 for round one, and while he had a tougher 5-over-par, 76 for the second day, he took home the flight win with a total of 2-over-par, 144 total for the two days.
Wagner said that his first round score definitely carried him, but he managed to hold on during round two.
“I did what I had to do to win. I kept it in control for the most part today and got it done and that’s what is most important,” Wagner said.
Wagner has a busy summer filled with many tournaments and will take the momentum from this win into July. His dream is to play collegiate golf at Wake Forest University, and ultimately go pro.
Kyle Haas of Winston Salem, N.C. took the overall championship with a total of 7-under-par, 135 total. Haas carded a 2-under-par, 69 for round one, and 5-under-par, 66 for round two.
“I feel pretty good, made a putt on No.18 which is always a nice finish. Yesterday I putted well, but today I putted even better,” Haas said.
Haas came in with back-to-back birdies on Nos.17 and 18, and had an eagle on No. 13. Coming into today at a three-way tie, Haas said that he kept his focus and just tried to keep making putts to stay in the running.
Haas is continuing to play many tournaments this summer, and will keep practicing while he has as much time off as he can get.
