Defending team champions, Ravenscroft of Raleigh, NC, continued their stellar play as they successfully defended their title by winning the 13th TYGA Middle School Championship hosted by Badin Inn and Golf Club at Badin, NC. Ravenscroft started the day with a two shot lead over Cannon School located in Concord, NC and St. David’s School from Raleigh, NC.
Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, NC used his lowest every competitive round, 65, to come from behind to win the 13th NC Middle School Championship. Fulton Smith started the final round one shot behind first round leader, Akshay Bhatia of Raleigh, NC but wasted no time as he made four birdies in his opening nine hole, shooting a 30. Smith then added one more birdie on number 10 before finishing off his bogey free round at five under par. Bhatia finished tied for second after a final round 68. Chris Kim of Cary, NC matched Smiths 65 today to finish tied with Bhatia. Grant Smith of Charlotte, NC did his best, attempting to catch the leaders shooting the only other under par round for the event, 68, to propel him into fourth place. Grant Smith’s fourth place finish was good enough for him to earn first team All-State honors along with Fulton Smith, Bhatia, Kim and Jack Heath of Charlotte, NC. Grayson Wotnosky of Raleigh, NC, Peter Fountain of Raleigh, NC, Britt Stroud of Raleigh, NC, Kenan Poole II of Raleigh, NC and Symon Balbin of Pinehurst, NC each received second team All-State honors.
In the girls’ division Amanda Sambach of Concord, NC captured the individual championship posting rounds of 75-76 for a two day total of 151. Sambach beat out Anna McDonald of Hickory, NC but a slim margin of three strokes, as well as fellow teammate Muskan Uppal of Cornelius by four strokes. All three players earned first team All-State honors. They were joined by Michelle Harn of Charlotte, NC and Hailey Pendleton of Waxhaw, NC. The following players received second team All-State honors; Carmen Tucker, of Fayetteville, NC, Riley Hamilton of Reidsville, NC, Rachel Tamaro of Albemarlo, NC Sophie Hollan of Concord, NC and Kasey Owenby of Cramerton, NC.
The TYGA Middle School Championship is both a team and individual event that is run concurrently. Players may compete with their middle school teams and/or individually. Team scores are used by combining the lowest two scores on the team. The girls and boys divisions play from the same tees.
The Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) is a division of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA). TYGA is a 501 (c) 3 organization providing playing opportunities for its members, educational seminars & events, a junior golf informational clearinghouse, Sponsor Clubs that grant junior access to golf facilities in North Carolina, monthly North Carolina junior rankings, and awards Junior Player of the Year and All-State awards to the top juniors in North Carolina. Any NC resident age 18 and under who has not started college is eligible for membership into TYGA.
