Durham, NC--The Pinecrest Patriots, from Southern Pines, NC, shot a team total 300 to beat out Cannon School of Concord, NC to take home the 9^th North Carolina High School Invitational. This is the second year in a row that the Patriots have bested Cannon to claim the title. The North Carolina High School Invitational conducted by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association brings the previous year’s state champions from both public and private high school teams, as well as top individual players in the state together to compete against one another. For the eighth year in a row the event was held at McConnell Golf’s Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC.  The Patriots were led by reigning North Carolina Junior Player of the Year as well as the number one ranked junior in the state, Joshua Martin, who shot -1 par, 71,  landing him in a tie for second individually. Pinecrest freshman, A.J. Beechler of Pinehurst, NC, assisted with the victory finishing with a +2 score of 74. James Sugg and Eric Bae contributed by posting scores of 77 and 78 respectively.  

Alex Smalley of Wake Forest, NC finished with used six birdies on the day to finish at -2 par to capture medalist honors.  Smalley who is currently ranked second in the state by the TYGA beat out a slew of players who finished tied for second. Noah Edmondson of Davidson, NC and Johnathan Rector of Hendersonville, NC finished tied with Martin at -1. Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, NC and Nolan Mills of Charlotte, NC finished tied for fifth shooting even par, 72’s.

The Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) is a division of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA). TYGA is a 501 (c) 3 organization providing playing opportunities for its members, educational seminars & events, a junior golf informational clearinghouse, Sponsor Clubs that grant junior access to golf facilities in North Carolina, monthly North Carolina junior rankings, and awards Junior Player of the Year and All-State awards to the top juniors in North Carolina.  Any NC resident age 18 and under who has not started college is eligible for membership into TYGA.
